Nature, heritage & the Camino

Nature, heritage & the Camino

Between the Serra do Xistral and the open plains of A Terra Chá, Abadín unfolds as a land of wide landscapes, historic villages, and nature in its purest form. Trails, recreational areas, and a rich rural heritage reveal the essence of its roots. The Northern Way of the Camino de Santiago crosses forests and footpaths where you’ll discover chapels, cruceiros, and treasures such as the Romanesque church of Santa María. Let yourself be guided by its paths, experience centuries-old traditions like the Feira de Santos, and enjoy a place where nature and rural life still set the rhythm.

Places to see

Abadín is much more than the gateway to A Terra Chá. Here, the mountains of Xistral and the hills of A Xesta and Cordal de Neda break the flatlands, revealing a landscape filled with history, legends, and hidden treasures. In this municipality, history and tradition walk side by side. You can trace the almost forgotten remains of the ancient hillforts of Moncelos and Baroncelle, or the prehistoric mounds of Romariz and Fanoi, and pause before the beautiful Romanesque church of Santa María de Abadín. And if you visit in September, don’t miss the San Cosme pilgrimage in San Martiño de Galgao —a living tradition that keeps the spirit of this land alive.

Church of San Martiño de Galgao

In Galgao, devotion to San Cosme goes back centuries. For a long time, he was worshipped in a small hermitage located in a wooded area to the northeast, of which only a few remains can still be seen today. The current parish church, dedicated to San Martiño and San Cosme and located in the A Xesta neighbourhood, hosts every 27th of September the famous Romería de San Cosme, one of the most popular pilgrimages in the area.

Church of San Pedro de Goás

In the parish of Goás, on the top of a small hill surrounded by meadows and woodland, stands the 16th-century Church of San Pedro de Goás. Take a moment to visit and enjoy the quiet charm of this rural landscape.

On one side of the Church of San Martiño, behind a small circular wooden cover, you’ll find a curious opening that allows visitors to leave a donation even when the church is closed —and from which the altar can still be seen..

Corvite
Ethnographic Mill

In Abadín, you’ll find the Corvite Mill, an old restored watermill that now serves as an ethnographic classroom. It’s the perfect stop to discover how the power of water was used in rural life, how these traditional mechanisms worked, and what everyday life was like for the people who used them. It’s part of a route that links several mills in the area —so if you love ethnography, nature, or simply walking through history, don’t miss it.

A protected
natural paradise

Abadín is part of the Terras do Miño Biosphere Reserve and also lies within the protected area of the Natura 2000 network Parga–Ladra–Támoga.
Within its territory rise the first foothills of the Serra do Xistral, one of Galicia’s natural jewels, with landscapes that blend high pastures, peat bogs, and heather moorlands. From Alto da Xesta, more than 500 metres above sea level, or from Alto da Corda, the views open out in every direction over a mosaic of hills, meadows, and villages that capture the essence of A Terra Chá. There’s still more to discover: the waterfall of the Rego de Muras is strikingly beautiful, and beneath the surface, the Cova da Meiga —also known as the Cova de Santos and similar in type to the famous Cova do Rei Cintolo just a few kilometres away— hides legends and natural formations waiting to be explored. A landscape where the wild meets the magical, perfect for those who love nature and adventure.

A Roxica Recreational Area (Gontán)

Next to the Labrada River, in Gontán, you’ll find the Gontán Recreational Area, known as A Roxica. If you’re travelling with children, this stop is almost a must: a beautiful natural pool with a bathing area, playground, paddle court, picnic spots, and quiet spaces among oaks and meadows make it the perfect place to spend a whole day surrounded by nature.

Romería de San Cosme da Montaña

A highlight of the year is the Romería de San Cosme da Montaña, which every 27th of September brings hundreds of people together at the Church of San Martiño de Galgao for a celebration that dates back at least to the 10th century.

Feria de Santos de Gontán

On the first Saturday of November, Gontán’s Feira de Santos —the traditional All Saints’ Fair— fills the streets with life, market stalls, music, and the timeless atmosphere of the old rural fairs.

ExpoGrelo

If you visit at the end of winter, don’t miss Expogrelo —a fair where the grelo (turnip greens) takes centre stage. And yes, you’ll want to taste it in every possible way!

San Antonio Horse Trail

In June, the Cabaleiros de Labrada Association organises the San Antonio Horse Trail —a horseback route that has become a cherished tradition in the village of San Antonio de Labrada.

If you love live music and good vibes, make a note of this…

Every June, Abadín comes alive with Rumboia Viva —a festival lovingly organised by the local youth, featuring Galician bands, outdoor activities, a market, workshops, and plenty of energy to have a great time. It’s all free, set in a natural environment that’s perfect for relaxing and enjoying the moment. Are you coming?

On the Northern Route of the Camino de Santiago

The section that crosses this municipality is about 20 km long and forms part of one of the most pleasant and beautiful stages of the entire route. You’ll walk among endless meadows, quiet villages, leafy woods, and old bridges such as Pontevella, which still carries the echo of thousands of pilgrims who crossed it before you.

Rivers, cows grazing by the roadside, and the endless green of A Terra Chá accompany your steps. It’s an ideal stretch to enjoy the landscape at your own pace. If you need a break, Gontán is the perfect place to rest, recharge in its recreational area, or simply pause before continuing your journey towards Santiago.
