A haven of
history & water
With two urban centres —its capital, Feira do Monte, and Muiment — and a mosaic of peaceful villages and endless landscapes, Cospeito treasures one of the most emblematic natural jewels of the region: a paradise of lagoons and wetlands, refuge for birds and wildlife, that embodies the very essence of this land. Here, nature sets the rhythm and rural life keeps its authenticity. Those who come to Cospeito discover a landscape that changes with the light and the seasons, where the paths lead to viewpoints, mills, and small heritage gems that tell the story of a very living Galicia.
To see
At the heart of the municipality lies the Lagoa de Cospeito, one of Galicia’s most valuable wetlands — a place where the water mirrors the sky and the flight of birds sets the rhythm of the day.
Beyond the lagoon, the land hides other treasures: the Torre de Caldaloba, wrapped in history and legend, stands as a symbol of resistance and memory; the Pazo de Sistallo, with its stately presence, recalls the elegance of rural Galicia. From the Mirador da Chaira, you can admire the sweeping views that open over the vast plain. Around them, churches, mills and ancient paths complete a landscape that preserves the authentic soul of A Terra Chá.
Torre de
Caldaloba
Standing on the remains of an ancient hillfort and overlooking the valleys of the Támoga and Miño rivers, the Torre de Caldaloba endures the passing of time. Once a medieval fortress, it was the stage for the final episodes of the irmandiña uprising and the refuge of Constanza de Castro, daughter of Marshal Pardo de Cela. Today, only its 25-metre tower remains, but its history and legends are still alive. Reaching it is a small adventure in itself — along paths and meadows, you’ll discover one of the most legendary corners of A Terra Chá.
Miradoiro da Chaira
From this high point, beside the chapel of the Virgen do Monte, the landscape of A Terra Chá unfolds vast and silent. Plains, meadows, and forests blend into a horizon that invites you to breathe and simply take it all in.
Vilapene Church and Cemetery
Nestled among meadows and rural paths, the church of Vilapene stands out for its understated beauty and the small cemetery that surrounds it — a gem of the Neo-Gothic style typical of A Terra Chá. Its pinnacles, arches, and granite crosses reveal the mastery of local stonemasons, heirs to a centuries-old tradition. A surprising corner that truly deserves a visit.
Pazo de Sistallo
This 18th-century Baroque manor, surrounded by gardens, is one of the most distinctive architectural landmarks of A Terra Chá. Its design is attributed to the same architect who worked on the Obradoiro façade of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Although it is privately owned and not open to the public, its imposing presence and the beauty of its surroundings make it a place filled with history and charm.
Museo das Zocas
In Muimenta, next to a restored one-room schoolhouse, the Museo das Zocas (Wooden Clogs Museum) pays tribute to the traditional craft of the zoqueiros — the artisans who make this traditional Galician wooden rural footwear. A group of centuries-old oaks and a stately ash tree, of great natural and cultural value, complete this space where nature, history, and craftsmanship come together.
If you love nature, in Cospeito you’ll find one of the most special landscapes in A Terra Chá — the perfect place for birdwatching enthusiasts. The Lagoa de Cospeito, the heart of the municipality and a Biosphere Reserve protected within the Natura 2000 Network, is a true haven for birds and for those who enjoy observing them in silence.
Around it stretch meadows and riverside forests where oaks, ash and birch trees grow, and where the walking trails invite you to move at an unhurried pace. Nearby recreational areas such as Ribas do Miño await you — perfect spots to relax by the river or spend a day outdoors surrounded by greenery.
Lagoa de Cospeito
It is one of the most valuable wetlands in Galicia and is part of the Natura 2000 Network within the Parga-Ladra-Támoga SCI. Its wide expanse of shallow waters provides a refuge for migratory birds and unique endangered plant species. The area offers walking trails and birdwatching viewpoints.
The Lagoa de Cospeito and the Casa das Aves Interpretation Centres are two spaces where you can discover the extraordinary biodiversity that surrounds the Lagoa de Cospeito, one of Galicia’s most valuable wetlands. Through exhibitions, panels, and educational materials, you’ll learn about the many bird species that inhabit this natural environment throughout the year.
Cospeito also comes alive through its culture, festivals, and flavours. If you’re in the area in spring, there are two events you can’t miss: the Antiques and Agricultural Machinery Fair in Feira do Monte, held on the last weekend of April and known for its lively popular atmosphere; and MOEXMU, in Muimenta, at the beginning of the month — a major annual exhibition showcasing the best of rural craftsmanship, agricultural machinery, and renowned livestock competitions.
